How not to land...

August 9, 2005...red neck parasailing. In preparation for a possible ejection we have to learn how to land so we don't hurt ourselves. Well, the training went great, the actual landing...not so great. Here are some pictures of the process...

What you're seeing here is the preparation before being pulled into the air. I'm attached to the pickup truck by cable, then the guys make sure the parachute will inflate properly before taking up slack. Once that is done, the truck slowly starts moving forward and I start running. I get airborne, the guy with the radio tells the truck driver and they "hit it" by accelerating as quickly as possible. I get around 300 feet up and they "cut me loose." In theory, this is where I land correctly and all is well. I didn't...

At least some good came out of this. Every class after mine has a new video to watch. "What not to do and how Bryan Guidry did it."

I removed the video to save some hard drive space. If you really want to see it, let me know and I'll email it to you.

What follows are the CAT scans of my spine the day of the injury. You can see the vertebrae that was crushed when I bounced on my knees (the third complete bone from the top in each picture).
These last two pictures are on October 28, 2005. You can still see the compressed bone, but the fracture is healed.
